What is Alkyd Resin?
Alkyd resin is a complex polymer that is formed by polycondensation of polyol (alcohol) and a
dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride. The acids (or anhydrides) that are generally used in the production of
alkyd resins are isophthalic acid, fumaric acid, maleic anhydride and dicarboxylic acid. The polyols used in
the production of this organic polyester are ethylene glycol, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol, glycerol
and neopentyl glycol.
Mass production of alkyd resins is done by adding unsaturated oils such as linseed oil, dehydrated castor
oil, or tung oil to ester-forming derivatives. The result of this polymerisation reaction is a branched
polyester compound that contains fatty acid side groups and water. The water produced during the reaction is
removed using an autoclave or by binding it with a solvent to form an azeotropic mixture that can be
removed.
On application of this polyester to a surface, the oil portion reacts with oxygen to form cross links,
yielding a tack-free film on drying. Alkyd resins are compatible with vinyl resins.
Types of Alkyd Resins
Alkyd Resins for Paints and Coatings:
During the manufacture of alkyd resins for paints and coatings, additives such as silicones or
isocyanates are added to give different properties to the final product. Resin manufacturers add chemical reagents
depending on the properties and characters of the final product as determined by the client. The amount of oil
used in the manufacture will determine the consistency, drying time and resistance of the final
product.
Applications of Alkyd Resins:
- Manufacture of oil paints for metal surfaces, such as automobile paints
- Production of plasticizer agents for external building paints
- Production of enamels (both airbrush and brush application)
- Manufacture of marine top-coat paints
- Production of weather-resistant paints
